Happy Mother’s Day to the mommas who made Bluebird Sky Farmstead! Without them, Bluebird Sky simply wouldn’t exist, because Danny and Annaliese wouldn’t exist!

The Treehouse Farm Collective farm store is officially opened! It’s located at 📍8104 N 63rd St and is open 12pm-6pm every day. On weekends the store opens early at 10 am. Stop by any day to browse the selections! The store is sure to grow over the course of the season and be filled with the most beautiful flowers and produce. We may be biased but the food at this store is thebomb.com.

Checking up on our year old feeders in their pasture. Looks like it’s just about time to move them again! Their next pasture has some hills and ditches and other topographical features. So even though they don’t know it yet, they’re in for a treat for the next few days!

As first generation farmers, we certainly know a awhile lot about doing things we’ve never done before. Both of us have the “Well it can’t be that hard, I’ll just do it myself” gene. Which can be both incredibly useful and incredibly frustrating on the farm

They’re seeming pretty happy about their new home! Plenty of space for them to run around and explore. Once they’re “homed in” to their new coop, they’ll be put in to the same pastured system our other two coops are in. All our hens get a new 50’x100’ section of pasture at least once a week, oftentimes more. To help encourage them to go inside at night, we install solar powered LEDs that light up the coop for the first few hours after sundown. Then we close the coop for the night and reopen it at sun up.

Our sows do their best to protect their piglets and are very responsive to their squealing. However, we’ve found that if they get laid on in the first few weeks, their squeals get muffled out and the Momma has no idea that she’s laying on one of her babies. This leads to suffocation and ultimately, death.

Feeding time is so nice when everyone cooperates 😅

First piglets of 2023 are on the ground! Mama and babies are all looking healthy, wealthy, and well.

I forgot to add a picture of Paco to my last post! He was the goodest farm dog we ever did meet. (Don’t tell Ulla and Ghost I said that 🤫)

Of course we found a farm while we were on the vacation. You can take the farmers off the farm but you can’t take the farm out of the farmers.

In our area of Colorado, Guinea Hogs are, in my opinion, one of the few (if not the only) breeds of pigs that can be raised regeneratively. Many “pastured pork” operations are using that term as a marketing ploy rather than committing to regenerative practices. That’s the problem with unregulated terms like “regenerative” and one of the biggest reasons we encourage everyone to know their farmers.

Baby season on the farmstead always starts out with laying hen chicks. We’re raising 200 more hens this year to occupy our “camper coop” that we picked up for a steal this winter (thanks to @63rdst.farm)! They’re growing well so far with minimal loss of life.

The grass is starting to green up, but we’re not quite done with the snow yet. I loved the green grass poking its way through the snow this morning. The pastures are going to love this bit of moisture.

Thirteen and a half years ago, when he was only 14 years old, Danny’s life was changed forever when his first dog, Caz, walked into his life. Danny was looking at puppies with his Dad when the only male of the litter climbed into his lap and refused to leave for an hour. Danny spent the next several hours on his computer creating a PowerPoint presentation titled “Why I Need a Dog” to present to his parents. Needless to say, the PowerPoint worked.

Chicken is mostly cut out of both of our diets since we’ll only eat birds that we’ve raised. All that really means though is that when we decide to have some, we go all out. This roasted chicken with potatoes and veggies, balsamic sautéed chard, and pan gravy really hit the spot yesterday. It’s always shocking just how much flavor is packed into a pastured bird. The difference is night and day from what you find in grocery stores.

When your spent grain freezes into a solid block, it doubles as an enrichment toy for your pigs!

Why do chicken coops only have two doors?
